Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to challenge particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
