Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such treatments must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
